My daughter started to show interest in helping me in the kitchen, especially when I made her favorite breakfast, pancake and she got to have couple chocolate chips after she helped me put them in the batter (maybe that is why she liked to help haa). Even though she created more mess for me to clean up but we had good time together. I made her an apron to keep her clothes (somewhat) clean, she can also wore the apron when she played with her kitchen set- that was a plus.
The apron is inspired from cami in creatingbycami, I use my own measurement and changed couple things; using elastic for necks strap to fit for bigger and smaller child's head, made its 2 in 1 apron, so kid can ware both sides, longer waist strap and Velcro so its adjustable, should be able to use for the next couple years. This apron would be good for children from 3 to 6 year old.
2 in 1 apron with elastic neck-strap |
Materials;
- 0.5 yard of main fabric, in this case it is Hello Kitty print (I can make an apron and a chef hat from this)
- 0.5 yard of gingerbread man print for the other side
- 0.5 yard for blue fabric (I used my left over fabric - but I think 0.5 yard is plenty)
- Velcro 0.75"wide , cut 2 pieces; 1.5" of rough side and 5" of soft side
- Elastic 0.75" wide, 10" long
Pattern (all measurement included 0.5" seam)
I just folded my 0.5 yard hello kitty fabric in half lengthwise, drew easy pattern on it , cut hello kitty fabric and then use it for pattern on gingerbread man fabric.measurement |
First piece |
Cut blue fabric;
35" x 3" for neck strap30" x 3" for waits strap
40" x 3.5" for ruffle
Optional / front pocket (my DD called kangaroo's pouch)
- cut two 9" diameter half-circle shape of fabric. Put right side together sew around , leave about 3" for turning, clip, turn inside out and then press.
- Make two of this pocket for hello kitty side and gingerbread man side.
Kangaroo's pouch |
Now the main apron
1. Neck strap -- make tube, insert elastic, sew or pin two ends so the elastic stays put.2. Waits strap -- make tube and fold in both ends, top stitch both ends and press.
- Sew Velcro on, rough piece on the front (about 2" from the end) and soft piece on the back (0.5" from end.)
3. Ruffle -- fold in both ends (width side) 0.25" , press.
- Fold lengthwise wrong side together, press and top stitch on both ends.
- Set the stitch and tension to the highest number then sew along the length of fabric.
4. Sew ruffle on hello kitty -- place ruffle on the right side of hello kitty fabric.
Pin & Sew ruffle |
5. Sew pocket & waits strap has the rough side of Velcro on top and then top stitch from this side to another side.
- Stop about 1" before you get to the edge of apron, carefully lift the needle , fold the edge away from needle / stitched path and then continue sewing to the end of strap.
- Sew round and back to the folded spot, stop, lift needle up, unfolded the edge and then continue to sew until meet the start point. ** (after I did this I realized that sewing waits strap in last step after turn the apron is easier but you need to pick right color of thread to blend in .. duh),
Pin and Sew waits strap and pocket |
6. Spread apron on the smooth surface, pin neck strap , fold waits strap in side apron.
Pin neck strap, fold waits strap in |
7. Place another side ( gingerbread man - with pocket) of apron on top, right side together. pin around.
8. Sew around , leave about 4" open on the top (neck) for turning.
9. Turn the right side out, press and then top stitch around the edge or just close the open seam.
